David Anthony Ed. D. Middle School

David Anthony Middle School is part of an exciting new educational development that creates physical and pedagogical connections across all levels of learning for the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. 

The two campus site delivers a holistic approach to tiered learning, encouraging collaboration and new opportunities that spread across disciplines and transcend grade levels. The campus also shares physical resources including drives, playing fields, parking, and a shared Mechanical Central Plant hosting a high efficiency combined HVAC system.

David Anthony Middle School was designed as a series of versatile learning communities with small, medium and large group work/flex areas that provide a physical variety of instructional spaces — all of which are connected to a wireless data system that faculty members can access from anywhere, including the outdoor learning courtyard.

Transparency, security and supervision were key design drivers. The majority of classrooms have transparent or semi-transparent observation walls from the corridors. The building itself is also transformed into a learning tool through the use of color coding and exposed mechanical/electrical/data systems, complimented by touchscreen kiosks that teach students about building systems and real-time energy use. The courtyard is similarly integrated with instructional opportunities including sundials, measurement tools, a rain harvest cistern, solar PV cells, wind turbine, sediment troughs, and active gardens for medicinal, food and environmental benefits.
