Binghamton, NY

One of the premiere higher learning and research institutions in the Northeast United States, Binghamton University has a proud history of academic exploration and collaborative learning. IBI Group was retained to lead the development of four key projects to enhance the overall quality of campus life:

Student Union North Food Services Renovations

This 16,000 square foot renovation and reconfiguration delivered a modernized food service marketplace and dining environment featuring a dozen unique vendors integrated throughout the seating spaces. Each food station comes to life as a distinctly branded experience with its own theme and appearance, creating a brilliant melting pot of culinary options within one hall. The project also included a fireplace lounge addition and the integration of a 5,500 square foot dining space incorporating the former Susquehanna Room into the newly united food hall. IBI Group provided full architectural and MEP services in conjunction with Connor Architecture.

Appalachian Collegiate Center

A key meeting point and communal hub for campus residents, the LEED-designed Appalachian Collegiate Center was designed as a component of the campus master plan, with IBI Group assuming the role of Architect of Record on this joint venture with EE&K Architects. Thanks to its unique hillside positioning, the center offers commanding views of the surrounding campus. Inside, a 538-seat dining hall accommodates meal-time rushes, serviced by a robust food court, kitchen facilities, bakery, convenience store, and cafe. The building also offers a number of comfortable meeting rooms, lounges, and office space to encourage team interaction, making it a de facto meeting point for students and faculty alike.

Chenango Room

This rehabilitation transformed the 3,600 square foot restaurant facility in the existing Science I building, including interior renovation work and the removal of existing aluminum frame and glass enclosed structures. It was replaced with a new, 3,371 square foot extension housing a gourmet cafe, full-service kitchen, serving area, 36-seat waiting area, and an outdoor patio. The new space accommodates three private dining areas and a total capacity of 160 seats.

O’Connor & Johnson Halls

IBI Group provided full programming, design, and construction administration services for the adaptive reuse of these two residential halls, converting them from dormitories to academic and administrative spaces. The project included renovation of the building envelope and interior finishes, interior reconfiguration, replacement of building MEP and roof systems, hazardous materials and asbestos abatement, site area redesign, refurbishment of landscape and site features, and the construction of a four-story link connector between the two buildings.
